Part 5 - AI’s Role in the Climate Crisis: Innovation, Action and Hope

Updated: Jan 28

When we think of fighting climate change, artificial intelligence (AI) may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it's already a game-changer.

What Is AI?

So, what exactly is AI? It's technology that helps machines think, learn, and solve problems. I use it nearly every day, whether brainstorming ideas, analysing results, or predicting my next existential crisis. Like our brains, AI processes complex data and suggests solutions, but at lightning speed.

Predicting and Preparing

AI predicts extreme weather events like floods, wildfires and hurricanes with impressive accuracy. By analysing vast amounts of data AI offers early warnings allowing communities to act quickly, save lives and reduce damage. AI accurately predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance in a 2023 study.

Boosting Renewables

Renewable energy is key to a sustainable future, but it’s not always reliable wind isn’t always blowing (except in Aberdeen), and the sun doesn’t always shine. AI optimises solar and wind energy by analysing weather patterns and energy use, ensuring these sources are used as efficiently as possible, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Protecting Forests from Space

AI-powered satellites make it easier to protect our forests. These satellites monitor deforestation in real-time, identifying illegal logging and safeguarding ecosystems like the Amazon.

Smarter Farming

AI helps farmers reduce their environmental impact. With sensors and algorithms, AI enables farmers to use water more efficiently, improve soil health, and predict pest problems cutting down on harmful chemicals and making farming more sustainable.

AI and the Circular Economy

Waste management is becoming smarter, too, thanks to AI. From improving recycling to designing products that can be reused, AI is helping businesses and communities move towards a circular economy where products are recycled and repurposed, rather than thrown away. This shift cuts down on waste and pollution 😊

Hope 🌱

AI is already driving real change in tackling climate issues, from predicting weather to protecting forests. The future holds even more potential for sustainable innovation.
