Part 4 - Your Climate Questions - Is It Too Late?

Updated: Nov 7

Many of us have questions and opinions about climate change, and I’ve received a few over the last couple of weeks. Your comments have inspired this post, and I will do my best to address your concerns…

  • Is it too late?

  • It’s too late anyway!

  • People will lose their jobs in the oil industry.

  • Can I really make a difference if others aren’t making an effort?

It’s Not Too Late

It’s a fair question but an inaccurate conclusion. Climate scientists and activists agree: it’s not too late to save our planet. With immediate action to reduce emissions and restore habitats, we can still prevent the worst outcomes of climate change.

There’s a lot of evidence that meaningful change is happening. Let’s look at some hopeful developments:

The Rise of Renewables

Renewable energy is booming, making significant headway against fossil fuels. The UK has seen major shifts, especially offshore wind. Recent data shows that renewables accounted for 40.6% of the UK's energy production and 50.4% of the UK's electricity, signalling that decarbonisation is possible and underway.

Carbon Capture and Reforestation

Cutting emissions alone won’t reverse climate change, but investment in carbon capture technology and reforestation is on the rise. While carbon capture is still evolving, millions of trees are planted worldwide each year, a proven solution that actively removes CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Job Transitions

Concerns about job losses in the oil industry are valid, and discussions are underway about retraining fossil fuel workers in green energy. Initiatives to create jobs in the renewable sector are leveraging Scotland’s existing energy expertise, positioning the country as a potential leader in clean energy.

Public Awareness and The Government

Awareness about climate change is growing, and our voices are being heard, pushing governments and businesses to take action. We’re starting to see real changes in emission regulations and net-zero targets.

You Are Making A Difference

Although our individual actions may seem small, we can collectively drive significant change:

Small Actions Add Up: In the UK, habits like reducing single-use plastics have made a huge difference. Since the charge was introduced, more than 7 billion plastic bags have been kept from polluting our environment and endangering our wildlife.

Become an Influencer: You don’t have to be a Kardashian to influence others! Our actions can inspire those around us to adopt climate-friendly behaviours, creating a positive ripple effect in our communities.

Market Influence: When we choose ‘Lush’ (the eco-friendly champ) over ‘L’Oreal’ (are they worth it, Jen?), we’re sending businesses a clean message that we want greener practices and products.

Personal Empowerment: Taking action combats feelings of helplessness and motivates further engagement.

Education: As Eco Warriors, we are role models for young people, inspiring them to advocate for a greener future.

Together, these actions create a powerful collective impact.

So, Is It Really ‘Too Late?

While the situation is urgent, it’s not too late to make a difference. The good news is that we can still prevent the most disastrous outcomes if we keep pushing for change at every level - personal, corporate, and governmental. Every action we take now matters and thankfully, there’s significant momentum worldwide, towards building a more sustainable future.

Thanks for reading. I hope I’ve addressed some of your concerns, and that this post will leave you feeling a bit more optimistic. Keep the questions and comments coming - they truly shape these discussions ❤️

Until next time ...
